PELTON FELL

Hubble, J., Pte., 1916

On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 18314 Private John Hubble serving with the 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 14/07/1916.

John born at Pelton Fell, was the son of Edwin and Elizabeth Dinah Hubble. Edwin was a coal miner hewer. They had at least five children:- Thomas born 1886, John born 1888, William born 1891, Frederick born 1898 and Elizabeth born 1902. In 1901 the family were living at 12 Middle Pit Row, Pelton Fell. John was employed at 13 years as a miner driver.

After Edwin's death Elizabeth later married William Johnson. They had at least two children:- Matthew born 1905 and James born 1907.

John married Edith Annie Ord on 1st April 1911. Two days later in the census Edith is with her parents at 6 Edward Square Chester-le-Street. She is 21 years and a worker in the Jam factory. John cannot be identified in the 1911 census. John and Edith later lived at 5 Lee Buildings Grange Villa. They had at least three children:- Thomas W. born 1911, Isabel born 1914 and John born 1915. (After John's death Edith married John W. Humes.)

John enlisted at Chester-le-Street.

He died of wounds during the attack on Bazentin-le-Grand.
