Unveiled 3rd February 1921 by Mr. Guy E. Armstrong, manager of Pelton Fell Colliery. Dedicated by Rev. Dr. F.H. Jackson, M.A., Rector of Chester-le-Street.

Memorial Description

Plaque, in moulded oak frame, stained green. The frame is rectangular. The stone plaque has a raised square top bearing a bronze Christ, crowned and robed, on a red cross, symbolising His triumph over pain and death.
The names are painted in red letters, listed under the year in which they died. The letters are “copied from Sir Marmaduke Lumley’s tablet above the 8th tomb in the north aisle of the parish church of Chester-le-Street”, and so the letter “u” has been replaced by a “v”.

Materials used

Caen stone framed in oak.

Inscription

Remember ye in the Lord our heroes who gave their lives for the Empire, in the Great War 1914-1918.
They loved not their lives unto death.
Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them. Amen.
