William Kirby has submitted the following:-

Joseph Bird was born at Burnhope in 1883 the son of Thomas and Mary Ann Bird. In 1901 the family were living at Oxhill near Stanley. Joseph was a miner at a local coal mine.

He married Annie Bain in 1907 at Chester-le-Street. In 1911 they were living at 41 Grange Terrace, Pelton Fell with the Bain family. Joseph and Annie had two children Florence May and John. Joseph is a coal miner hewer.

Joseph enlisted at Newcastle and joined the Royal Army Medical Corps.

The Chester-le-Street Chronicle 06/06/1918 reports that Mrs Bird was visiting her husband in hospital at Oxford and that he was injured in the air raids on hospitals in France recently.

He died of wounds at 3rd Southern General Hospital, Oxford June 5th 1918. Mrs Bird arrived four hours after he died.

She added "Deeply mourned by his loving wife, son and daughter" to his headstone.

Recipient of the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Joseph Bird is remembered at Pelton on P27.04 at Pelton Fell on P27.01 and P27.04 at Chester-le-Street on C105.01, C105.12, C105.15 and C105.40 and at Gateshead on G39.030
