Stobbs, T., Pte., 1916

Thomas Stobbs

In St. Vaast Post Military Cemetery Richebourg L'Avoue is the Commonwealth War Grave of 18/605 Private Thomas Stobbs serving with the 18th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 28/07/1916.

Dorothy Hall has submitted the following:-

Thomas was born at Pelton Fell on 27th February 1895. He was the only son of Thomas and Catherine Stobbs. He had six sisters, Mary Jane, Catherine, Elizabeth, Sarah, Alice and Florence. Thomas senior was a Coalminer – Hewer.

In 1901 the family was living at 7 Whitehill Terrace Pelton Fell. In January 1909 Thomas left Pelton Fell Council School and went for five terms to Chester-le-Street Secondary School leaving to be a pony driver. By 1911 the family had moved to Overmans’ Houses at Newfield. Thomas aged 16 was a driver underground in a coal mine.

Thomas enlisted in September 1914 at Durham and by 25th of September he was at Cocken Hall being trained. He joined the 18th Battalion Durham Light Infantry.

On the 6th December 1915 Thomas embarked for Egypt arriving there on the 22nd. In the following March Thomas was moved to France arriving there 11th March 1916.

Thomas was killed in action 27/28th of July 1916.

Thomas Stobbs is remembered at Chester-le-Street on C105.01, C105.12, C105.14, C105.15, C105.40, at Newfield N69.01, at Pelton P26.01, and at Pelton Fell P27.01 and P27.04 and at Durham in D47.013 page 196.
