In the Boulogne War Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 10683 Private John William Scarth, serving with the 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards who died 15/11/1914.

John William Scarth was born in Durham on the 27th February 1895, he was the second son of John William Scarth, of 10 Prospect Terrace, Neville's Cross, Durham, formerly Able Bodied Seaman of the Royal Navy, and his wife Annie, daughter of the late Thomas Atkinson, Verger at Durham Cathedral.

John was educated at St. Margaret's, Crossgate Parish School in Durham.

He enlisted on the 15th April 1914, but he died of wounds received in action at Rentel on the 29th October in the No 13 General Hospital at Boulogne. He was unmarried.
