In Hexham (St Andrew’s) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of:

F.D.M. Smith
Navigator
Royal Air Force
15th December 1944, age 22.

Surging with life he went
lost to our sight.

Francis David Matheson Smith was the son of Revd. Arthur Augustus and Mary Smith of Hexham.

He served with 12th Squadron (Bomber Command), based at RAF Wickenby, Lincs. He was in a Lancaster Mk1 returning from a bombing mission to Ludwigshafen, Germany, when it crashed at 15.07 on its return to base. It crashed and exploded at Holbeach Drove, Lincs. All crew were killed.
