1. The first proposal for a memorial was made at a meeting of the Deacon’s Court in 1947.
2. The proposal was for either a font or for Elders' Chairs.
3. The font was designed to harmonise with existing church furnishings.
4. Rev. A.A. Smith was Minister of the church 1937-1946. He served as RAF Chaplain April 1941 - July 1945. His son
Sgt/Nav. F.D.M. Smith was killed in 1944 while serving with the R.A.F. At the time of the unveiling Rev. Smith was Minister at Thropton Presbyterian Church. He was invited to perform the dedication because of his association with the church during the war years, and that his son’s name appeared on the brass plate.
5. The plaque was removed to Hencotes when ceiling collapsed in 1948. Services were held in Hencotes building until its adaptation to dual use as hall and church and rededicated in 1960.
