In Hexham (St Andrew’s) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of:

1497152 Flight Sergeant
F.W. Rutherford
Pilot
Royal Air Force
3rd December 1945, age 22.

In loving memory

Frank Wallace Rutherford was born on 4th August 1921, the eldest child of Frank and Florence Amelia Rutherford (nee Wallace) of Hexham. According to the 1939 Register the family lived at 46 Alms Houses, Hencotes, Hexham, where Frank’s occupation was described as a ‘clerk-fireclay trade’.

The Operations Record Report for 03/12/1943 (15.20-16.25) describes the following:

In the afternoon two sections of “B” Flight were called to escort as far as Portreath, a York plane carrying a V.I.P. By time the a/c (aircraft) were due to return the weather had deteriorated. A F/Sgt Rutherford crashed making his landing approach and died in hospital some hours later. F/Sgt Rutherford an experienced pilot and popular member of “B” Flight will be sadly missed.
