Heslop’s Local Advertiser 22/09/1916 carries a notice which reads:
“Lance-Corporal James Woodruff Stubbs, R.F., killed in action on August 11th, aged 21 years. Son of John and Margaret Stubbs, South Pelaw, Chester-le-Street, late of Felling and Heworth.”
