Ingle, G., Pte., 1916

Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery

In Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, West - Vlaanderen, near Ypres is the Commonwealth War Grave of 9/13936 Private George Ingle serving with the 8th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment who died 18/01/1916.

George Ingle, known as Georgie as a child, was born in 1896, in Middlesbrough, one of seven surviving children, (6 deceased), of Richard Ingle (1861) and Phoebe Johnson (1864) both of Easingwold, Middlesbrough, where they were married in June 1889. Richard initially worked at the Carlton Iron Works in Stillington, near Stockton-on-Tees, as a labourer but in 1911 he and the family were living at 32, Gordon Terrace, Ferryhill. Richard was now employed as a labourer at the colliery coke ovens and George was a screen lad, above ground.

George enlisted in the East Yorkshire Regiment, 8th Battalion, 62nd Brigade, 21st Division, part of Kitcheners 3rd Army, in Beverley, October 27th 1914. His record describes him as 5” 7” tall, fair complexion, blue eyes and mid brown hair. November 12th 1914 he was transferred to the newly formed 9th Battalion, 90th Brigade, 30th Division but was not posted to France until October 7th 1915. Little more than three months later Private 9/13936 George Ingle was wounded January 17th 1916. He was taken to the 17th Casualty Clearing Station near Rimy Sidings where he died of his wounds the following day January 18th 1916. George is interred at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, West - Vlaanderen, near Ypres, Belgium, grave II D 36. His headstone bears addition words, requested and paid for by his father and reads, “He Died That We Might Live”. Private George Ingle was 20 years old and unmarried.

February 1st 1916 the Ministry authorised the return of his personal effects and the allocation of his awards which were the 1915 Star, the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.
