In St. Mary and St. James' Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 42975 Pilot Officer William Appleby, serving with the Royal Air Force, who died 23/07/1940.

The headstone reads:

To the lovely memory
Of my husband
William Appleby, Pilot Officer, R.A.F.
Who was killed on active service on 23rd July 1940

He was valiant.

He was serving with 269 Squadron in Coastal Command. He was a crew member of Hudson J P5152 UA-J which took off from Wick and crashed in Wales. All four crew were killed.
