He was the son of James and Rebecca Ferrier, of 22, Allgood Terrace, Bedlington, and husband of Mary Jane Ferrier, of 23, Hirst Terrace, Bedlington.

Private J.R. Ferrier, 22 Allgood Terrace, Bedlington, was killed in action on July 1st.

John, older brother of George was born in Bedlington in 1893 to James and Rebecca Ferrier. His father was a Road Foreman for the council who died when John was 9. but all the boys went to work in the pit when they were old enough. In 1914 John married Jane Baldry and they had a son named James.
John was one of the many Tyneside Scottish who died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.
He is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04 and in Bedlington on B15.01, B15.02, B15.06 and B15.20
