BEDLINGTON STATION

Ferrier, G., Pte., 1917
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 17555 Private George Ferrier, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 09/09/1917.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

George, brother of John and the youngest child of James and Rebecca Ferrier, was born in Bedlington in 1895. Like his brothers he went to work in the pit.

George was one of the first in Bedlington to volunteer. On 27th August 1914 he enlisted in the 6th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regimental (No. 11372) but when he was sent to Regimental Headquarters in Beverley he was discharged as 'not likely to be an efficient soldier', probably because he was only 5' 2” tall. He must have enlisted again when conscription began, but not directly into the Tyneside Scottish. He is remembered with his brother on the Thiepval memorial.

He is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04 and in Bedlington on B15.01, B15.02, B15.06 and B15.20
