killed in France Octr. 6th 1918

killed in France Sept. 21st 1917
aged 20 years.

William was born on January 19th 1894 and was working as a miner living with his father, William, at 19, Fourth Row, Ashington when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on April 19th 1915. He served with the Nelson Battalion until October 30th 1915 when he went sick with diarrhoea. William rejoined his unit on February 24th 1916 and was awarded the Military Medal for his actions at Gavrelle on June 13th 1917 (London Gazette 18/07/1917). Transferred to Drake Battalion on February 7th 1918 whilst serving with the Trench Mortar Battery William was promoted to Petty Officer on April 22nd 1918. He was killed in action on October 8th 1918.
