In the main entrance hall. Old school demolished, new building provided and also demolished and third school built due to the use of high alumina content in the concrete. The memorial was transferred to the new building

Unveiled February 23rd 1921 by Francis Priestman, Esq.,

Memorial Description

Plaque 3 feet 6 inches high x 6 feet wide mounted on an oak frame. The dedication at the top is in Art Deco style, as is the ornamental border which goes along the top and partly down the two sides.
In the centre at the top is a motif of a Greek man kneeling, and displaying a scroll bearing the dates "1914-1918".
The names are in six columns in Roman upper and lower case.

Brass on dark oak.

Notes

1. The memorial was taken down in 2003 to allow for redecoration in the entrance hall and replaced.

2. Hugh Cairns, a former pupil at the School, became the "Ashington V.C.".

One Hundred Years of Bothal School booklet, in possession of the School, which gives some details of the former school, the War Memorial, including photocopy of the Order of Service of Unveiling; an account of Hugh Cairns, the Ashington V.C.

The Response the occasional newsletter of the Northumberland and Durham Branch of the Western Front Association No.6 New Series carries an article on Hugh Cairns, VC, by Tom Hewitson, included a photo.
