Maclagan, J.G., Lieut., 1918

In St. Mary's Burial Ground at Wooler is a headstone which reads:

In loving memory of
Philip Smeiton Maclagan
Solicitor
born 30th November 1858
died 13th October 1906
Mary Elizabeth Maclagan
widow of the above
Philip Smeiton Maclagan
died 1st October 1922, aged 52 years
also of
Philip Whiteside Maclagan
Lieut. 5th Battn. Border Regt.
eldest and beloved son of the above
who was killed in action in France
16th April 1916, aged 20.
also of
James Graham Maclagan
Lieut. 5th Battn. King's Own Regt.
second son of the above
who was killed in action near Arras
10 August 1918 aged 20

The Northerner, Vol. XIX, no. 1, December, 1918, page 6 contains the following, transcribed by Tony Harding:

"Lieutenant J. Graham Maclagan, Royal Lancaster Regiment, attached Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, was killed in action August 4th. He was the eldest son of the late Mr. P.S. Maclagan, solicitor, and of Mrs. Maclagan, Rothbury, Northumberland, and a great nephew of the late Archbishop Maclagan, of York. Aged 21 years, he was educated at Appleby Grammar School, Westmorland, and afterwards he was a Science Student at Armstrong College, Newcastle."

His brother Philip also died.

He is remembered in Newcastle on NUT063, in Wooler W68.01 and in Durham on D47.151 page 63
