In St. Mary's Burial Ground is a headstone which reads:

In loving memory of
Philip Smeiton Maclagan
Solicitor
born 30th November 1858
died 13th October 1906
Mary Elizabeth Maclagan
widow of the above
Philip Smeiton Maclagan
died 1st October 1922, aged 52 years
also of
Philip Whiteside Maclagan
Lieut. 5th Battn. Border Regt.
eldest and beloved son of the above
who was killed in action in France
16th April 1916, aged 20.
also of
James Graham Maclagan
Lieut. 5th Battn. King's Own Regt.
second son of the above
who was killed in action near Arras
10 August 1918 aged 20

The Newcastle Daily Chronicle 21/04/1916 reports:

“Berwick Officer Killed.
News was received in Berwick yesterday of the death of Lieut. P.W. Maclagan, Border Regiment, who had gained mention in Lord French’s last despatch in January. Lieut. P.W. Maclagan was a son of the late Mr. Philip Maclagan of Wooler, solicitor, and a nephew of Dr. Maclagan and Mrs. Henderson, the Anchorage. He was educated at Worksop College, and was preparing for Oxford when the war broke out, his intention being to take Orders. He obtained a commission last autumn in the Border Regiment. He had been serving at the Front for 18 months. He belonged to a famous Scottish family, Sir Douglas Maclagan and Dr. Maclagan, Archbisop of York being his grand-uncles."

His brother James also died.

Philip Whiteside Maclagan is remembered in Wooler on W68.01 and in Morpeth on M17.12
