Allan, E., Pte., 1915

On the Helles Memorial is the name of 22112 Private Edward Allan, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 15/10/1915.

Edward Allan was born in 1897 at Whittingham, Northumberland, the son of George & Jane Allan.

The 1901 Census records Edward, aged 4, living with his parents at Whittingham Railway Crossing. His father was a Railway Platelayer & his mother attended the crossing gate. His siblings in 1901 included George (14); Margaret Jane (12); & Thomas Dixon (10).

Before the war Edward worked for a Mr. Waters of Coldgate Mill, presumably as a Miller or General Labourer.

Edward enlisted at Newcastle upon Tyne into the 15th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers before transferring to the 8th Battalion for service in the Dardanelles. He died of wounds on 15th October 1915.

His brother Thomas Dixon Allan also fell.

Edward Allen is remembered in Wooler on W68.01 and W68.03, at Kirknewton on K15.01 and in the Alnwick Gazette Almanack
