In St. Hilda's churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 1382699 Sergeant (Pilot) Alan Joseph Ainsley Dodd serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died 28/03/1942.

The headstone reads:-

In loving memory of
Thomas William Dodd
who died Feb. 13 1939 aged 52
also
Alan Joseph Ainsley Dodd
Sergt. Pilot R.A.F. - V.R.
who died March 28 1942 aged 20.

Sgt (Pilot) A J A Dodd was killed in Miles Master trainer N7558 of 55 O.T.U. (Operational Training Unit) based at RAF Usworth. He was flying at (unauthorised) low level over his house when the aircraft struck trees and crashed. Also killed was a Sgt J A E Sharp.
