Ross, A., Pte., 1917
In Oosttaverne Wood Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 53268 Private Adam Ross, serving with the Royal Army Medical Corps who died 11/09/1917.

Soldiers Died in the Great War states that he was born and enlisted in Amble.

Sandra Ridley sent this:

I am the only living relative of Adam Ross, who went to Durham University and died in the Great War aged 24, having just received his commission.

I always knew his name was on the Amble War Memorial, but now, aged 66, I want to know more, and googled his name, and with amazement I find there is information about where he is buried, his regiment and the date of his death. My mother had the telegram that came to her grandparents to inform them of the death of their son, but as she had dementia, I didn't realise that she was gradually destroying all these records.

I would like to know something about his university education, and I will certainly visit his grave in Belgium.

He was a wonderful son, a great scholar, and I followed a link to Kind Edward VI school in Morpeth, where he was Head Boy in 1912. I myself attended the Girls Grammar School.

I am not sure how you obtained all the details you have on the Amble memorial, but it is wonderful to see that I can now go and look at the headstone in Amble East Cemetery which includes his name and that of my great-grandparents, and I now have his regiment and number.

I have many books that were end of year prizes in all subjects, family stories tell that he came home on the bus to Amble with books up to his chin, he was a brilliant student, who won a scholarship to Oxford, but was told not to accept as Oxford pre first war was not for ordinary Northumberland boys, no matter how clever, so he went to Durham as did his sister Marianne, who died of TB in her first teaching job.

Adam Ross is remembered in Amble on A13.01, A13.07 and A13.08 and in Morpeth on M17.06 and M17.12 No.46
