In Vendresse British Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 5342 Private Adam Hogg, serving with the 1st Battalion Scots Guards who died 06/10/1914.

Adam Hogg, was the son of William and Esther Hogg; husband of Mary Hogg, of 39, Palatine Street, South Shields. Born at Silloth, Cumberland.

He was a member of the N.E.R. Police Force at Tyne Dock and entered employment with the N.E.R. in March 1906.

He was extremely fond of shooting and was a clever marksmen, being "scratch man" in the Tyne Dock Rifle Club which he had been a member since its inception.

[sic] He won many prizes-both in club and open competitions- and secured no fewer than four since last Christmas.

"He was also awarded the Donegal Badge entitling him to shoot at Bisley. He was of a genial disposition and was held in high esteem". [NER Magazine].

Adam went to France on the 13th August 1914.

Captain Balfour of the British Expeditionary Force when notifying Mr Hogg's death, stated "that he was killed whilst on patrol duty, and was buried by his comrades the same day. He added that Hogg was a brave soldier."

He was 32 years of age , and leaves a widow and four young children.
