Chapman, D.M., Lieut., 1918

Pozières Memorial

On the Pozières Memorial is the name of Lieutenant David Markwell Chapman, serving with the 3rd Battalion, Rifle Brigade (17 Brigade, 24th Division), who died 25/03/1918.

He was born in 2 Amberley Street, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland during the March quarter of 1876. Son of the late John Pattison Chapman (a grocer) and Mary Ann Chapman of Sunderland. They all resided at 2 Amberley Street, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland in 1881.

Husband of Laura Fanny Chapman (née Watson) of 30 Blagdon Avenue, South Shields. (Their marriage was registered in Sunderland during the September quarter of 1905). They had a boy Edward Snowdon Chapman, born 1910.

David Markwell attended Westoe Boys’ Secondary School, South Shields. He graduated from Armstrong College, Durham University, with a BSc and a 2nd Class Teaching Diploma.

By 1911, he was a schoolmaster at Westoe Boys’ School.

David was a member of the University's Officer Training Corps whilst at Armstrong College. David became a Temporary Second Lieutenant in the East Surrey Regiment on 1st January 1916, and later a Lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort's Own), 3rd Battalion.

He was mobilised to France in January 1918.

Killed in action 25th March 1918.

The Sunderland Echo reported his death on Monday, 08/04/1918 :-

"Lieut. D. Maxwell Chapman, B.Sc.

Lieut. D. Maxwell Chapman B.Sc. (42) of the Rifle Brigade, 2 Amberley Street, has been killed in action. Previous to joining the Army deceased was an assistant master at Westoe Road School, South Shields."

In his will he left effects of £930 16s 2d to his widow.

He is remembered at Harton on H104.03, and at South Shields S86.027, S86.086, S86.137 and also in Newcastle on NUT063
