Joseph was born 1st February 1892 at Lumley, the son of John and Sarah Ann Hartis. In 1911 the family were living at 26 Finchale Terrace Sixth Pit. John was a Coal Miner, William (23) was a Coal Miner Hewer, Joseph (19) was a Blacksmith Striker and John (2) completed the family.

By the time Joseph enlisted into the Royal Marines the family had moved to 8 Mitchell Street Annfield Plain.

Joseph died of pneumonia and was buried at Christ Church, Lumley.
