On the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France, is the name of 23/334 Private John Arnold serving with the 23rd (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

Son of Samuel and Jane Ann Arnold, of Gibralter Row, Andrews House, Marley Hill; husband of Grace Arnold, of 6, Bowes Terrace, Andrews House, Marley Hill, Newcastle-on-Tyne.

In St Cuthbert's Churchyard, Marley Hill is a family headstone which reads:-

In loving memory of
(missing) Samuel Arnold
died 19th April 1914
aged 72 years
Jane Ann
his beloved wife
died Feb. 24th 1919
aged 66 years
Also Pte. John Arnold
their son killed in
France 1st July 1916
aged 35 years
Also Joshua their son
killed in action at the
Dardanelles 3rd May 1915
aged 28 years
