In Contalmaison Chateau Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 3208 Gunner Thomas Hudson, serving with the Royal Field Artillery who died 22/10/1916.

Thomas Hudson was born in South Eaton, Yorkshire in 1889. He married Elizabeth Elsdon, born 1886, a native of Trimdon, County Durham, September 1909. The following year Elizabeth gave birth to a daughter Sarah Elizabeth. In 1911 they were living at 52 Durham Street, Sherburn near Durham where Thomas was employed at the coal mine as a wagon-way man.

At the outbreak of war Thomas enlisted in Spennymoor and was assigned to the Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery, originally part of the 1st Northumbrian Brigade R. F. A.. In April 1915 they were deployed to France arriving in the Ypres Salient April 22nd however their first offensive was in June 1915. They remained on the Ypres Salient until 1916. In May of that year the 1st Northumbrian Brigade were re-organised and re-designated the 250th Royal Field Artillery. Gunner 3208 Thomas Hudson died of wounds October 22nd 1916, aged 24 years and is interred at Contalmaison Chateau Cemetery, France, grave reference C. i. 13. His widow paid 18/4d (Eighteen shillings and four pence) for an additional inscription added to his headstone, “ The Undone Years-The Cruelty Of War- Sadly Missed By- Widow, Daughter And Father.

He received the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. His widow Elizabeth was his sole beneficiary and received all effects due to him in 1920 by which time she had remarried and was living as Mrs Elizabeth Rollings of 754 Claremont Avenue, Scarborough Bluffs, Toronto, Canada.
