Duhallow ADS Cemetery

In Duhallow ADS Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 75600 Bombardier Robert Elliott serving with the Royal Field Artillery who died 02/05/1916.

Robert Elliott was born 1895 in the district of Bishop Auckland, the eldest son of Thomas Elliott, native of Etherley born 1869 and his wife Mary born 1872 in Escomb, one of 8 children 5 boys and 3 girls. Thomas was employed at the local colliery working as a hewer and the family were living at Phoenix Row, Pollards Land in 1901. By 1911 they had moved to 20 Dale Terrace Ferryhill and Robert, who was now 16, was also employed as a putter below ground.

Robert enlisted in Darlington and was assigned as Bombardier 75600 to the 57th Howitzer Battery of the Royal Field Artillery XLIII Artillery Brigade. Under the command of the 1st Division they departed for France in August 1914, attached to the 48th Brigade of the regular army. In May 1915 the 57th Battery XLIII Brigade was attached to The Lahore Division and participated in the Battle of Hill 60, April 17th to May 5th 1916 to recapture the high ground lost to the Germans during the First Battle of Ypres in 1914. Bombardier Robert Elliott was killed in action during this battle May 2nd 1916 and is interred at Duhallow ADS Cemetery, west of Ypres, Belgium, grave VIII B 17. His father commissioned and paid for an additional inscription on his headstone which reads, “Death Divides But Memory Clings”. He was 20 years old and unmarried. Robert was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal these were sent to his family who were living at 52, Dene Bridge Row, Chilton, Ferryhill.
