On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 17946 Private Joseph Garrett serving with the 1st Battalion the East Yorkshire Regiment who died 16/09/1916.

Joseph (Walker) Garrett was born in (Kirk) Merrington, County Durham in 1897 the son of James Garrett and Mary Ann Musgrave (married to Harrison Fall by 1901). Mary Ann died in 1909 and Joseph in 1911 was boarding with his half brother William Musgrave and his wife at Kirk Merrington. Joseph aged 14 years was a screener at the colliery..

Joseph enlisted in Ferryhill as Private 17946 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, 64th Brigade, 21st Division. He was posted to France in 1916 and during that year his regiment participated in the Battle of Albert and the Battle of Bazentine Ridge. It was during the Battle of Flers - Courcellette September 15th-22nd 1916 that Private 17946 Joseph Garrett was killed in action September 16th 1916.

Joseph has no known grave and his name is inscribed on pier and face 2C of the Thiepval Memorial to the missing of the Battles of the Somme, Department de la Somme, Picardie, France. Private Joseph Garrett was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. His awards, separation pay and all monies owed to him were assigned to his legitimate beneficiary, his half brother William Musgrave.

He was born in Merrington Co. Durham. His address on his service papers was given as 13 Stephenson Place, Kirk Merrington.
