At Divisional Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, near Ypres, Belgium is the Commonwealth War Grave of 23029 Private Samuel Moody serving with the 2nd Battalion Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry who died 20/05/1917.

Samuel Moody was born 1894 in Coundon, County Durham, one of 9 children, 6 boys and 3 girls. His father Frederick, (1954), a coal hewer, was a native of Oswestry, Shropshire. He married Mary Ann Hughes (1859), of Etherley in September 1877 in the district of Bishop Auckland. Samuel’s mother died prior to 1911 as in the census of that year his father is listed as a widower, he and the unmarried, “boys”, were living at Clarence Houses, Coxhoe Samuel was employed as a driver, working underground.

Samuel first enlisted as 10032 in the Durham Light Infantry and was then transferred to Private 23029 Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, 2nd Battalion, attached to the 38th Brigade, 5th Division. His Battalion was involved in the Second Battle of Ypres, April 22nd - May 22nd 1917. Samuel was wounded and taken to the 14th Field Ambulance, a mobile unit of the Royal Army Medical Corp which would have been situated close behind the fighting front to receive wounded and sick men, most of whom would have received treatment at the front line dressing station, and prepare the seriously wounded for evacuation to a Casualty Clearing Station. Private 23029 Samuel Moody died of wounds May 20th 1917 and is interred at Divisional Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, near Ypres, Belgium, grave D. 4. Samuel was 21 years old and unmarried.
