In Duhallow A.D.S. Cemetery West Vlaanderen, Belgium is the Commonwealth War Grave of 131407 Corporal Richard Smith Langdale serving with the 234 Field Company Royal Engineers who died 31/07/1917.

Pauline Priano has submitted the following:-

Richard Smith Langdale was the son of Robert and Jane Elizabeth Langdale of 19 West Chilton, Ferryhill and was born at Littletown County Durham. In 1911 he was still at school one of the surviving seven children of Robert and Jane Elizabeth (five others had died). Robert was a coal miner hewer.

Richard enlisted in the 234th (Stockton-on-Tees) Field Company Royal Engineers attached to the 39th Division. Following training near home they concentrated in the Winchester area moving to Aldershot September 28th 1915 and were joined by additional units. In October they moved on to Witley and reached full strength. The Division minus the 118th Brigade embarked for France in late February 1916. They were in action during the Battles of the Somme and in 1917 fought in the Battle of Pilckem Ridge, the opening battle of the Third Battle of Ypres, July 31st-August 22nd 1917. It was during the first day of this battle that Corporal R. Smith-Lansdale 234th Field Coy, Royal Engineers was killed, July 31st 1917. He is interred in Duhallow A. D. S. Cemetery, West Vlaanderen, Belgium, grave I. A. 42. He was 20 years old.
