On Tyne Cot Memorial is the name of S/41616 Private Joseph W. Potts, serving with the 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders who died 26/10/1917.

He was the oldest son of four children of Thomas and Dora Potts of Netherwitton Hall Yard. In 1911 Census Thomas wass listed as the groom at Netherwitton Hall. The second son, Frederick, also joined up and is mentioned on the war memorial in the village.

Joseph was killed in the third Battle of Ypres, Passchendaele, the battle lasted from 31st July till 10th November.

Joseph W. Potts is remembered in Netherwitton on N6.01, N6.03 and N6.04
