In Mindel Trench British Cemetery, St. Laurent-Blangy, Pas de Calais, France, is the Commonwealth War Grave of 60597 Gunner William Gill serving with the 56th Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery who died 23/04/1917.

In St.John the Baptist Churchyard is a headstone which reads:

In loving memory of

56 Siege Battery R.G.A.
killed in action 23rd April 1917
aged 23 years
Fourth and dearly beloved son of
Robert and Isabella Gill,
Nunriding Moor
John their youngest son
died 9th Dec. 1917, aged 18 years
The above Robert Gill
died 8th Dec. 1921, aged 88 years.
Margaret, their daughter
died 23rd Dec. 1924, aged 26 years.
The above Isabella Gill
died 27th Dec. 1940 aged 83 years.
Edward Gill
died 13th March 1963, aged 71 years.
Josephine Gill
died 7th June 1971, aged 82 years.

William Gill Royal Garrison A 60597 of 56th Siege Battalion

Died 23/04/1917 age 23 at Mindel Trench, Arras. A small cemetery, the family paid for a special inscription on his headstone ‘Thy Will Be Done’. William was from Nunriding Moor, Mitford, he was one of eleven children, son of Robert and Isabella Gill. On enlistment 29/10/1915 his occupation was listed as gamekeeper, he was 5’ 9 with a 36 inch chest, religion listed as Church of England. He was posted 02/11/1915, he had leave to the UK 14/01/1917, difficult to make out how long this was but it was extended by 1 day. On his death his effects of letter packet, book and flash lamp where returned to his Mother 30/08/1917. His Mother was also sent in 1919, his will, plaque and scroll, and his War and Victory medals in 1921.

He is remembered in Mitford on M12.01 and in Netherwitton on N6.03
