Wilkinson, R., Cpl., 1917
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of PO/818/S Corporal Robert Wilkinson, serving with the Royal Marine Light Infantry who died 19/02/1917.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

Robert was born on February 18th 1895. He was working as a sawyer, living with his father, Robert, at 24, Northumberland Dock, Percy Main when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on October 17th 1914 (Tyneside Z/455).

He transferred to the Royal Marine Light Infantry and joined the Cyclist Company on December 14th 1914.

Robert was invalided to the UK from Gallipoli on October 5th 1915 (undisclosed reason).

He joined the 2nd Royal Marine Battalion in France on September 25th 1916 and was killed in action on February 19th 1917.

Robert's brother John William Wilkinson also died.

Robert Wilkinson is remembered in Percy Main on P22.01 and in Tynemouth on T36.14 page 29.
