Wallis, A., Lieut., 1918
On the Vis-en-Artois memorial is the name of Lieutenant Alfred Wallis, serving with the Royal Marine Light Infantry who died 08/10/1918.

Colin Boyd has provided the following:

Alfred was born on April 17th 1893. He was the son of Robert Acrid and Florence Sophia of 36, Holywell Avenue, Monkseaton.

He enlisted in the Royal Marines on February 9th 1915. Alfred was promoted to Corporal on February 9th 1915, Sergeant on may 6th 1915 and then Temporary Lieutenant in the Royal Marine Submarine Miners on June 3rd 1915. He served at Cliffords Fort from June 3rd 1915 to July 1st, Blyth from July 2nd 1915 to November 11th 1915 and then Forth from November 11th 1915 to December 12th 1917.

After promotion to Temporary Captain on March 23rd 1917 Alfred was transferred to the 63rd Royal Naval Division as a Temporary Lieutenant on December 12th 1917.

Alfred joined the 1st Royal Marine Battalion on October 5th 1918 in France and was killed in action on October 8th 1918.

Alfred Wallis is remembered at Barnard Castle on B135.20, at Whitley Bay on W84.01, W84.02, W84.14 and W84.30
