Spraggon, G., Pte., 1917

In the Tincourt New British Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 27331 Private George Spraggon, serving with the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards, who died 02/12/1917.

George Spraggon, the youngest son, was born at Barmoor, Northumberland, on the 17th August 1879, to the late William Spraggon, and his wife Elizabeth [Eliza] Jane Violet.

George was educated at the Ford Village School and Haltwhistle School.

He was a Gamekeeper, and in 1901 he was boarding at the Keeper's Cottage at Featherstone. He married at Haltwhistle Parish Church on the 29th July 1903, Elizabeth Jane Violet, [Laverick Cottage, High Warden], daughter of Thomas Browell, late of Haltwhistle. They had four children, Margaret Alice, born on the 14th November 1906, Mary Isabell, born on the 9th December 1909, Hannah E., born on the 18th March 1912 and Alister Charles, born on the 28th May 1917.

In 1911 the family were residing at The Liverick, High Warden, Hexham. He stated his job still as a Gamekeeper.

George enlisted on the 17th October 1916, and was sent to France and Flanders on the 7th April 1917. He died of his wounds on the 2nd December 1917, received at Cambrai, at No 5 Casualty Clearing Station at Tincourt.

His Sergeant-Major wrote I was very sorry to lose him. Your husband was a man everybody admired.
