In Mierlo War Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1109394 Bombardier Thomas Wood serving with the 13th Medium Regiment, Royal Artillery who died 27/11/1944.

Margaret Burgess has submitted the following:-

Thomas Wood was born 4th January 1910 in Newbiggin by the Sea, the son of Penement and Isabella Grant Wood.

He married May Ann Harris in 1934 and they had one son.

Thomas died in the Netherlands and is buried in Meirlo War Cemetary, 2.F.4.

The Inscription on his headstone added by the family is “What the Lord gaveth, the Lord has taken, Rest in Peace”

His older brother Penement died in WW1.

In St. Bartholomew's Churchyard Newbiggin by the Sea is a family headstone which reads:-

In loving memory of
Penement
Beloved husband of Isabella Grant
Wood Died Octr. 20th 1934 aged 69 years
Also Thomas their son
Died of wounds in Holland
The above Isabella Grant Wood
Died Dec. 19 1946 aged 73 years
Also Penement son of the above killed
In action Dec. 3rd 1915 aged 19 years
