Penement Wood

St, Bartholomew's Churchyard

On Redoubt Memorial, Helles is the name of Z854 Able Seaman Penement Wood serving with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 03/11/1915.

In St. Bartholomew's Churchyard, Newbiggin by the Sea is a family headstone which reads:-

In loving memory of
Penement
Beloved husband of Isabella Grant
Wood Died Octr. 20th 1934 aged 69 years
Also Thomas their son
Died of wounds in Holland
The above Isabella Grant Wood
Died Dec. 19 1946 aged 73 years
Also Penement son of the above killed
In action Dec. 3rd 1915 aged 19 years

Penement Wood was born 21st April 1896 in Newbiggin by the Sea, son of Penement and Isabella Wood. He began work as a Token Boy at the Colliery whilst living at 15 King Street. Records show he enlisted in the RNVR 2nd November 1914; Collingwood Battalion 'A' Company 2nd Platoon and on 8th June 1915 he transferred to RNVR Hood.

He died aged 18 at Gallipoli. His actual grave is unknown. His parents were living at 12 King George’s Road, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea.

The following is recorded in the diary of Sub Lieutenant JC Hilton, 4th Platoon 'D' Company, Hood Bn:- 2/12/15 "At 8pm I went on watch in No.6 Barricade and relieved Sub Lieutenant Cole. About 8.45pm the sentry in the left hand far goggle was killed by a bullet, which went through his left eye. His name was Wood & he was an old Collingwood man."

Penement's brother Thomas died in World War Two.
