In St. John's Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 620231 Aircraftman 2nd ClassWilliam James Emery serving with the 7 Squadron Royal Air Force who died 09/10/1939.

The headstone reads:

In loving memory of
William J.
the beloved son of
William J. & Ellen Emery
who died Octr. 9th 1939 aged 22 years
on active service in the R.A.F.
Death divides but memory clings.

The Newcastle Journal of Friday 13/10/1939 has the following announcement:

EMERY – Ashington, 232 Sycamore Street (result of an accident), on 9th inst. Aged 22 years 11 months, William James, beloved son of William James and Ellen Emery. Interment Seaton Hirst Churchyard Saturday, leaving residence 2 p.m. All friends kindly invited.

His death was registered at Aylesbury, Bucks.

He is remembered at Hirst on H62.02 H62.04 and at Ashington on A17.27 where his name is given as “W.V. Emery”
