Bailey J., Pte., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 21/661 Private Joseph Bailey, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

Joseph was born at Houghton-le-Spring in 1878 to Michael and Ann Bailey, and the family moved frequently. A coal miner in 1891, Joseph was a bus driver in Gateshead in 1911. He married Elizabeth Young in Sunderland in 1897 and they had four children: Frederick, Mary, Joseph and Annie.

He died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.

He is remembered in Bedlington on B15.06, and Bedlington Station on B163.04
