BEDLINGTON STATION

Doyle, T., L/Cpl., 1916
On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 18597 Lance Corporal Thomas Doyle, serving with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

Carole Fife has provided the following:-

Thomas was born in Whitehaven, Cumberland, in 1889. His parents, James and Mary Doyle, were from Wicklow in Ireland. James was a miner and the family moved to Bedlington in the 1890s, with all the boys following their father into work down the pit. In 1911 the family was living at 22, South Row, Bedlington.

Thomas evidently chose to join an Irish Reiment due to his parentage, but at the time of his death he was part of 102nd Trench Mortar Battalion, Royal Field Artillery, which was attached to the Tyneside Scottish. He died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme and is remembered on the Memorial at Thiepval and on Ireland's Memorial Roll of Casualties of War.

He is remembered in Bedlington Station on B163.04 and in Bedlington on B15.06 and B15.11
