Hannay, Hannah, W.S., Pte., 1916

On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 6491 Private Watson Selby Hannay, serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers (10th Battalion) who died 29/09/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

Watson Selby Hannay was born at Bedlington, Northumberland in 1892. He was the son of George and Mary Ann Hannay (nee Hindmarsh). The census and birth records use the name Hannay but CWGC and other military records show the name Hannah.

In 1901 Watson, aged nine, was living with his family at 16, Shiney Row, Bedlington. Shiney Row is one of the main colliery rows leading to the Doctor Pit.

In 1911, he was 19, single and working in the coal mines as a putter.

Watson enlisted in 1914 when living at Shiney Row and was the brother of Thomas Hannay who was killed in action on 4th June 1915.
