Hannay, Hannah, T., A/Smn., 1915

T. Hannay

On the Helles Memorial is the name of Tyneside Z/986 Able Seaman Thomas Hannah (Hannay) serving with Collingwood Battalion, Royal Naval Division, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, who died 04/06/1915.

Carole Fife has provide the following:

Thomas is given the surname of Hannah in Military and CWGC records, but in his birth record and in the Enlistment Book and on memorials his name is Hannay, while in the census it is Hanway in 1901 and Hannay in 1911. Thomas was born in Bedlington in 1890 to George and Mary Hannay who lived in Shiney Row, Bedlington, and when he was old enough he went to work down the pit with his father. Thomas was one of the first men in Bedlington to volunteer, and presumably he hoped to go to sea for an adventure, but he was destined to join the Royal Naval Division and to fight on land in Naval uniform. Thomas was the eldest of the three Hannay brothers who served. His brother Watson Selby Hannay also fell.

He is remembered at Bedlington on B15.02, B15.06, B15.11, B15.16 and B15.26 page 93
