On the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France, is the name of SD/2073 Private William Johnston, serving with the 12th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, who died 10/05/1916.

In Ashington (Holy Sepulchre) Churchyard is a family headstone which reads:

In affectionate memory of
Alexander,
the beloved son of
William & Mary Johnston
who died at Ashington
May 1st 1903, aged 20 years.
The above William Johnston
died April 12th 1916,
aged 66 years.
Also the above Mary Johnston
died July 29th 1930,
aged 86 years.
Also of
Private William Johnston, son of
John and Jane Johnston,
and grandson of the above,
who fell in action in France
May 10th 1916, aged 19 years.

He was the son of John T. and Margaret Jane Johnston, of 26, Third Row, Ashington.

Morpeth Herald 07/07/1916 carries a brief obituary:

ROLL OF HONOUR

JOHNSTON.- Killed in action, May 10th, 1916, aged 19 years 9 months, Pte. William Johnson [sic], dearly-beloved son of John and M.J. Johnson [sic], 26 Third Row, Ashington, grandson of Mary and the late William Johnson [sic], also the late John and Johanna Murray, Ashington.-
The face we loved is now laid low, The fond, true heart is still;
But the unknown grave is the bitterest blow, None but an aching
heart can know.- Deeply mourned by father, mother, only brother, and all who knew him.
