Addison, R.H., Sgt., 1918

On the Pozieres Memorial is the name of 22001 and 700391 Sergeant Robert Henry Addison, serving with the 1/23rd Battalion, (County of London) The London Regiment (T.F.)., who died 09/05/1918.

Robert Henry was the eldest son born at Berwick on Tweed on the 26th March 1894, to father, ex Sergeant-Major John Addison. R.G.A. [Manager of a bar], and his wife Sarah, (daughter of Robert Fair, of Berwick). They had 6 children, but one died. Olive Fair born in 1893. Robert Henry born 1894, Herbert Mumford born 1896, John Valentine born 1897, and Ethel Mary Clemente born 1908.

Educated at the Berwick National School, and the Military School at Dover. The family resided at 16 The Parade.

Robert was a clothes outfitter with a Mr R. Craik, at Hide Hill, then later with a Mr Jno Smith who took over Mr Craiks business. He then was employed by Messrs Foster Porter, London with whom he was working when War broke out.

His father was a veteran of the Royal Artillery, and was on the Permanent Staff of Berwick Militia. His mother is sister of Miss Fair, High Street., Berwick a member of an old Berwick family, whose brother is Lieut. Harry Fair, a worthy Berwicker, who entered the Army as a boy, and last year won a Commission as an officer.

His brother John was serving in the 1/7th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers and was wounded.

Robert had enlisted on the 8th October 1914, in the Territorial Force, and served with the British Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from the 14th March 1915.

Henry was wounded in the head, and was sent to a hospital in Birmingham.

He was wounded in action on the Somme, but died on the 9th May 1918. He was unmarried.

He is remembered at Berwick-on-Tweed at B25.01, B25.08 and B25.19
