On the Vimy Memorial, Pas de Calais France is the name of 11441 Private Stanley Godfrey serving with the Canadian Infantry (4th Battalion) 1st Central Ontario Regiment who died 23/05/1915.

Stanley Godfrey was born in 1896 at Newcastle-on-Tyne. He was the youngest son of Mary Godfrey from Heaton, Newcastle-on-Tyne, and Phillip Godfrey from Giles in Lincolnshire.

In 1901, Stanley, who was 4 years old, was living at 80, Falmouth Road, Heaton, where his father was a shopkeeper. In the family home at this time were siblings James, 21, Margaret, 20, John, 18, William, 17, Ethel, 15, George, 12, Minnie, 11, Robert, 8 and Douglas aged 7.

The 1911 Census shows the Godfrey family living a 36, Rothbury Terrace, Heaton. Stanley, aged 14, was employed as an office boy and his father is recorded as being grocery manager. Siblings Margaret, William, Ethel, George, Minnie, Robert, Douglas are still in household.

His father died in 1916 at the age of 63.

Military records were not found, however CWGC documents confirm his parents’ names and that he was the husband of Mary Godfrey of 16, St Andrews Crescent, Blackhill, County Durham.

Stanley Godfrey is remembered in Heaton on H91.24, H91.25 and H91.48
