          In Memoriam
Pte. William Young, Gloucester Regt. Now reported killed at
          the Front.
The agony of the world continues to seek us out. Official
notification has been received that the Army Council, from
lack of any further news, has been regretfully constrained
to conclude that William Young, 11 Eversley Place, who was
posted as "missing" on June 21st last, either on, or since,
that date. He was a particularly winsome and gifted lad,
and just entering upon a useful career in the service of the
Church and Sunday School. When the call to military service
was sounded for all such as he, his response was prompt and
wholehearted. Though he would very willingly have lived for
the high things and above all, to spare his parents and
brothers the pain of his early going, yet there is no doubt
his last hour was both his most competent and his happiest.
At that supreme moment he was the Happy Warrior "Attired with
a sudden brightness like a man inspired," and so we will
remember him. Such a life, blameless and staunch, beautiful
in its conception of duty, and ever true to the Highest,
has not been lived in vain.

                    Awarded Military Medal
                    Sergt. Michael Riley, N.F.
          Heaton Sergeant's Record
The award of the Military Medal to Sergt. Michael Riley,
of the Northumberland Fusiliers, is a merited distinction,
will be appreciated by his many friends in Newcastle.
He was a Private in the Army reserve at the outbreak of
war, and proceeded to France in August, 1914. He was
through Mons, the Aisne, St.Eloi, the first and second
battles of Ypres, the Somme, and the battle of Arras.
In the July offensive last year he was wounded, but did not
leave France, and returned to the firing line after two months.
He has come through his other engagements without a scratch.
He has been promoted on the field three times, and notification
that the Military Medal has been conferred upon him "for
gallantry on the field" has just been received by his wife, Mrs.
Riley, of 34 Addycombe Terrace, Heaton. (Local Press)
          --------------------------------------------------
                    Awarded Military Medal
"Sergt. M. Riley (353), on the morning of the 9th of April,
after his officer has been wounded, took command of his platoon,
and through his coolness and calmness went through the village
of Tilloy under heavy shell and machine gun fire. Again, on
the night of the 13th, whilst attacking the village of
Guemappe, he encountered heavy shell and machine-gun fire,
but his coolness again came into evidence by digging themselves
in on a sunken road, thus saving the lives of his platoon again."

          Private Walter Sloan
          Scottish Rifles
Though on the Roll of Honour of our sister church at
Whitley Bay, yet the death of this brave soldier at
the Front touches keenly the heart of our Heaton Congregation.
For many years, Private Walter Sloan was an active worker
in our church, and as brother of Mr. Robert Sloan, our
Session Clerk he was well known to most of us, and deeply
respected by all who knew him. From earliest boyhood he
was a member of our Sunday School, and for many years
secretary of "The Society of Christian Endeavour". During
these years of noble work for the Master amongst the young
of the congregation, he gained for himself the love and
respect of his colleagues in this important sphere of Christian
Church work. Though not physically robust, yet Private
Walter Sloan cheerfully responded to the call of Country
and King, enlisting in that fine regiment of the line – the
Scottish Rifles. In the early period of training he was
sent to Ireland, and from there to France, where he soon
saw active service in Line and Trench. During these operations
he was unfortunately struck down with an attack of pleurisy,
dangerous symptoms having supervened he succumbed in one of
our hospitals in France. Thus the brave went home, not fallen
in battle, but stricken on the field, died at the post of
duty, and now we believe at rest in God. The writer had the
privilege of a visit from Private Sloan, before he went across
to France, and from that one interview alone knew that a true
heroic soul had gone to fight on behalf of Justice and Freedom
          for all Nations.
The deep sympathy of Heaton and Whitley Bay Churches will go
forth to his widow and child, and to all other members of
          his family.

          A Brave Soldier
Awarded Military Medal for gallantry and service rendered to
          your country.
Gunner W. Lyall, Machine Gun Corps.
The following is an extract from a letter sent to his parents
          by his Section officer:
". . . .I don’t expect you will have been told what he was
granted the medal for. I know that most of the men who get
decorations are a bit shy about telling what they did. However,
your son received his along with a comrade for digging some
comrades out from a dug-out which had been blown in. They
performed this act of gallantry under very heavy shell fire . . .
I feel highly honoured in having such men serving under me".

           Pioneer Arthur B. King
           (Royal Engineers)
By the death of this brave young soldier at the Front,
our Literary Guild has lost a faithful and earnest worker,
and one who was for a long time Assistant Secretary.
It is sad to think of so many of our brave young men being
sacrificed in this terrible War. Pioneer Arthur B. King had
just reached manhood and had before him a promising and useful
career. In civil life he was in the service of the London
Joint Stock Bank. In the autumn of 1915 he enlisted in the
Royal Fusiliers (Banker's Battalions), and in December 1916
was transferred to the Royal Engineers. He was on active
service at various fronts, and in the midst of sever fighting
was killed by a stray bullet in France, on December 1st 1917.
He was the youngest son of Mr. E.G. King, our respected Elder
and Missions Treasurer. To Mr. and Mrs. King and family in
their sore bereavement we tender the deep sympathy of Heaton
congregation, we, with them mourn the loss of this noble and
           heroic son.
