On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of S/11719 Lance Corporal William Norman Blair, serving with the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) 8th Battalion who died 14/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

William Norman Blair was born about 1898 at Newcastle-on-Tyne to parents George and Sarah Elizabeth Blair who were both from Newcastle.

The records in 1901 show the family of William living at Elswick, Newcastle where his father was a hardware commercial retailer. William was aged two and he had a brother, George, who was aged three at this time.

The 1911 Census records the Blair family living at 20, Coquet Terrace, Heaton, Newcastle-on-Tyne where there were five people living in the house, including his brothers, George, 13, and H.L. Blair, age 2. William was shown to be 12 years old at this time and his father George was still a commercial traveller.

Military records show William enlisted at Newcastle into the 8th (Service) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers and on death his effects went to his father George, indicating he was not married. The Pension Index Card for William records only his father. CWGC documents show William’s parents living at of 20, Coquet Terrace, Heaton Newcastle-on-Tyne.

Was he the "W. Blair" named on H91.34 or the "Norman Blair" named on H91.44?
