William was born in 1878 at Carlisle, Cumberland. He was married to Elizabeth (nee Nixon) at Brampton in the second quarter of 1899. They lived at Oaklea Bungalow, Steele’s Land, Earsdon Road, Monkseaton West.

William enlisted at Newcastle upon Tyne, serving with the Yorkshire Regiment (5923, Private, ‘D’ Company) before being transferred to the 6th (Territorial) Battalion, N.F. He was forty years old when he died.
