Hastie, E.E., Pte., 1918

In Newcastle (St. John Westgate & Elswick) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of S4/173516 Private E. Ernest Hastie serving with the Army Service Corps, who died 09/07/1918.

The family headstone reads:

In loving memory
of
Samuel Ridley
who died Sept. 5th 1881,
aged 55 years.
also Elizabeth, his wife
who died Dec. 7th 1891,
aged 65 years,
Robert Campbell Ridley
their son
died March 5th 1869,
aged 18 years.
E. Ernest Hastie A.S.C.
their grandson, who died at
Prees Heath Military Hospital
July 9th 1918, aged 34 years,
also John Hastie
died Feb. 5th 1929,
aged 75 years.

Edward Ernest was born and enlisted at Newcastle upon Tyne. He was the husband of Elizabeth T. White whom he married at Arthur’s Hill Presbyterian Church, Newcastle on the 10th February 1917.

He enlisted on 4th April 1916 and served with the Reserve Supply Depot (Prees Heath). Prior to enlisting Edward Ernest was employed as a butcher. He died from Pneumonia and is buried at Whitchurch, Shropshire.
