Herbert Tom Calvert was born at Gosforth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 24th August 1893, he was the youngest son of William Christopher Calvert, of 49 Elizabeth Street, South Shields, an Engine Driver, and his wife Emma, daughter of William Raper.
Herbert was educated at the South Benwell Board School, and was employed at St Hilda's Colliery as a Miner.
He joined the Royal Naval Division on the 11th January 1915, and was sent to Gallipoli 23rd June 1915.
He was killed in action on the 23rd September 1915. He was killed near Kew Trench, and was buried there.
The Chaplain wrote:-He was shot at his post in the trenches on 23rd September 1915. He died without suffering, like a true and noble in the service of King and Country. We laid his remains to rest in a field near by the place where he fell, I had the privilege of reading the Burial Service, at which his Commanding Officer was present. His comrades have erected a cross to mark the spot where he lies at rest.
