On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Steward William Robertson Young, serving with the Mercantile Marine who died 04/01/1917.

William Robertson Young a Steward, SS Lonclara, Mercantile Marine, son of John and Hannah Jane Young; husband of Hannah Sophia Young, of 41, Mile End Road, South Shields. Born at South Shields.

SS Lonclara, built by Ropner & Sons, Ltd., Stockton in 1911 and owned at the time of her loss by Port of London Authority, London, and was built as a Hopper Barge. Converted to a Cargo Ship in 1916 as a British steamer of 1294 tons.

On January 4th, 1917, "SS Lonclara" was sunk by a mine from the German U Boat UC-31, commanded by Kapitänleutnant Otto von Schrader, 0,5m east of Hendon Rock Buoy, River Wear. 4 persons were lost.

William Robertson Young is remembered in South Shields on S86.036, in which he is shown as serving on the S.S. Upminster, and on our List of Ships’ crews.
